The 21st of August 1952 was a special day for all Maronites in Lebanon. On this day the Maronite League was founded by a group of men of intellect and jurisdiction. The first general assembly was also elected that day with Mr. George Tabet as the President, alongside: Dr. Elias El-Khoury, Mr. Jean Abu Jaoude, Professor Shaker Abu Suleiman, Professor Ernest Karam, Professor Pierre Helou, Prince Hares Shehab, Professor Michel Edde, and finally Dr. Joseph Tarabay. You can currently find among the association’s ranks former Presidents of the Republic, members of parliament and ministry, as well as state employees from the first and second categories, retired senior officers, judges, heads of economic and social institutions.
The Maronite League Association is a private and nonprofit organisation. It is funded through annual subscription fees paid by affiliates in addition to various donations.
The Maronite League Association forms a pressure group that was founded in order to support Lebanon which is a free, independent and pluralistic democracy where all citizens have equal rights and responsibilities; an essential element for the continuity of co-existence and peace.
The association currently has nearly 1,000 members, and accepts a limited number of members each year.
